Lady Panthers fall behind early in loss to Knights

Led by first-year head coach Aisha Veasley, the Boulder High School girls basketball team has had high hopes for success this season, but the Lady Panthers fell short again on Tuesday  night in their 61-34 loss to Fairview.

In the first quarter, the  Knights jumped out to an early 16-2 lead, and by the half, Fairview’s Carlee Lough had scored 20 points while the Knights extended their lead to 28-13.

The Boulder girls, 4-8 overall and 0-5 in Front Range League action, played with passion in the third quarter, but Fairview’s Lough and the Knights’ stout defense was too much for the Panthers to mount a comeback from a 22 point deficit at the end of the quarter.

For the Panthers, post player Ande Lampert, a junior, led the team with 14 points.

Senior Ashley Kennedy added nine points for the Panthers. Despite the loss, she stayed positive.

“I think we tried hard and never gave up. We stayed together, but there is always room for improvement,” Kennedy said.

Sickness and injury has been a major factor in Boulder’s recent losses. Senior Lizzie Hickey was sidelined with illness, forcing her to miss one of the biggest games of the season.

The Panthers returned to practice on Wednesday, working to rebound from a tough loss to their crosstown rivals and to prepare for a 6:30 tip-off against Poudre at home tonight.
