Many of the students who put together the Conference on World Affairs panels at Boulder High in early April gathered at Le Peep in Boulder to enjoy a free breakfast hosted by Boulder High media specialist Becky Vancura to celebrate the success of this year’s panels.
With more than 20 people involved in the planning of the conference, there were some challenges in getting everyone together for the brunch.
“One of the hardest things this year was to get all of the busy students together for our meetings,” Vancura said.
During the conference, students who helped plan the panels were excused for the day to watch the discussions they had helped construct. Those who worked to produce certain panels would get to meet with the panelists and talk to them before each panel. After the conference was over, students gathered in the library to write thank-you letters to each of the panelists.
Of all the students participating in designing the conference, BHS seniors who had been amassing working-panel ideas over their previous years of experience with the planning committee were the largest contributors to the construction of the event. As a thank-you for their hard work and commitment to the success of the Boulder High Conference on World Affairs, the seniors were asked to take one more vote concerning the committee: where to dine for the celebratory brunch.
“It was exciting! I never thought that I would get the chance to just spend a Sunday morning hanging out and eating pancakes with Becky and other Boulder High staff members,” senior Molly Webb said. “I’ll be gone next year, but I hope everyone works hard on the conference and that Boulder High remains the heart of the city.”
With graduation on Saturday and summer break in less than two weeks, the underclassmen of the Conference on World Affairs group can look forward to assembling next year to plan the 2015 conference and recruiting new students to help out with organization. Vancura was hopeful that next year will be even better than before.
“We hope that next year more teachers take advantage of this unique and wonderful opportunity, and we are always looking forward to new students joining in order to build and host the Boulder High conferences,” Vancura said.
